Landscaping Cost in Pune 2026: A Full Breakdown, Including the Bits Nobody Quotes

Landscaping Cost in Pune 2026: A Full Breakdown, Including the Bits Nobody Quotes: Pune Greens blog

Landscaping in Pune runs from about ₹15,000 for a small garden makeover to ₹5,00,000 and beyond for a bungalow garden. That spread is not vagueness. It reflects one decision that moves the number more than area, plant choice or anything else: how much of your garden gets built rather than planted.

This is the full breakdown, including three things that routinely appear halfway through a project and never appear in the quote.

Landscaping Cost by Project Size

Project TypeAreaTypical Cost
Small garden makeoverUp to 500 sq ft₹15,000 to ₹50,000
Medium residential500 to 1,500 sq ft₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000
Large bungalow garden1,500 to 5,000 sq ft₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000
Farmhouse5,000 sq ft and above₹3,00,000 and up
Society or commercial campusVariesCustom quote

Per square foot, most residential work in Pune lands between ₹100 and ₹350. Planting-led projects sit at the bottom of that band. Anything with significant paving, walls or water sits at the top or above it.

Hardscape Is Where the Money Goes

Split any landscaping quote into two halves and the picture becomes obvious immediately.

Softscape is the living part: lawn, beds, shrubs, trees, soil conditioning. Hardscape is the built part: pathways, paving, retaining walls, steps, pergolas, seating, lighting, water features.

On a typical Pune residential project, hardscape takes 55% to 70% of the budget while occupying a much smaller share of the garden. Here is roughly how a ₹1,00,000 medium residential project distributes:

ComponentShareTypical Spend
Paving and pathways25 to 35%₹25,000 to ₹35,000
Soil conditioning and levelling12 to 18%₹12,000 to ₹18,000
Plants, shrubs and trees12 to 18%₹12,000 to ₹18,000
Lawn laying10 to 15%₹10,000 to ₹15,000
Drainage and irrigation8 to 12%₹8,000 to ₹12,000
Lighting5 to 10%₹5,000 to ₹10,000
Edging, borders, finishing5 to 8%₹5,000 to ₹8,000

If a quote surprises you, count the square feet of paving before you question the plant list. Halving a stone pathway saves more than halving the planting.

Indicative Hardscape Rates in Pune

Indicative Softscape Rates

ElementTypical Rate

The Labour Floor Under Every Quote

Landscaping is labour-heavy, and knowing what that labour legally costs tells you when a quote is too good to be true.

Maharashtra’s revised minimum wages, notified in February 2026 and effective from 1 January 2026, put an unskilled worker in Zone I, which includes Pune, at roughly ₹13,921 a month. Skilled workers in Zone I sit higher, around ₹15,532 a month in the Shops and Commercial Establishments schedule. The statewide unskilled daily rate works out to about ₹563 a day.

Apply that. A four-person team on a two-week project is roughly 40 person-days. At legal rates that is ₹22,000 to ₹28,000 of labour before a single paver or plant is bought. If someone quotes ₹35,000 all-in for a project needing that much work, either the scope is smaller than you think, the materials are poor, or somebody is not being paid properly. All three eventually become your problem.

This is also why hardscaping costs what it does. Laying stone properly is skilled work, and skilled masonry carries a higher rate than planting.

Drainage: The Line Item Pune Cannot Skip

Every landscaper in Pune should be planning for water, and the reason is in the rainfall pattern.

India Meteorological Department figures put Pune’s average annual rainfall at about 763 mm, with roughly 605 mm falling between June and September. July alone averages around 184 mm. Close to four fifths of the year’s rain arrives in four months, in bursts rather than a steady drizzle.

A garden designed without slope and drainage handles that badly. The failures are predictable: a beautifully paved patio with no fall towards a drain becomes a shallow pool every July, waterlogged beds rot roots from below, and a lawn laid over compacted laterite sits in standing water instead of draining through.

Budget 8% to 12% of the project for drainage and irrigation. It is the least visible money you will spend and the most expensive to retrofit, because fixing drainage means lifting the paving above it.

Pune’s laterite soil compounds this. It drains fast when loose and turns rock hard when compacted, so the levelling and conditioning stage is not optional prep work, it is part of the drainage system.

Three Costs Nobody Puts in the Quote

1. Tree Permission

This one catches people repeatedly. Under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, you cannot simply remove a tree from your own garden. Permission has to come from the Tree Authority through the Pune Municipal Corporation, and cutting without it is an offence carrying a fine and possible imprisonment. PMC has publicly warned of penalties running to several thousand rupees for damaging trees.

The cost is usually modest. The delay is not. Applications take time, and a project sequenced around removing a tree in week one can sit idle waiting for clearance. If your design touches an existing tree, start the application before the contract, not after.

Transplanting rather than felling is often both cheaper and more likely to be approved, and a mature tree relocated well is worth more to the finished garden than anything you would plant in its place.

2. Rainwater Harvesting

In Maharashtra, new buildings on plots of 300 square metres and above have required rainwater harvesting since 2007, and plots above 1,000 square metres since 2002, as a condition of getting the occupancy certificate.

Landscaping an existing property does not automatically trigger this. But if you are already digging for drainage, adding a harvesting structure at the same time costs a fraction of retrofitting it later, and it feeds directly into the rebate below.

3. Access and Debris

Material goes in and rubble comes out. On a bungalow with gate access wide enough for a tempo, this is cheap. On a plot where everything moves through a narrow side passage by hand, it adds labour days at the rates above. Renovation projects also generate demolition waste, and disposal is a real line item that honest quotes show separately.

The Rebate That Comes Back Every Year

Under Section 140(B) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, the Pune Municipal Corporation gives a property tax rebate for eco-friendly installations. Any one of solar, rainwater harvesting or vermicomposting earns 5% off your property tax. Any two earn 10%.

A landscaping project is the natural moment to claim this. You are already excavating, so the rainwater harvesting structure is at its cheapest. A vermicompost unit fits into almost any garden and turns your own green waste into the compost the beds need.

Two conditions. Applications go to your PMC regional office ahead of the annual cutoff, which has fallen in mid-February in recent years. And the rebate holds only while the system works: PMC has been explicit that if an inspection finds it non-functional, the benefit is withdrawn.

This is mainstream, not a loophole. PMC records show claims across these categories grew from 23,173 properties in 2012 to 2013, to more than 1,11,000 by 2022 to 2023.

Why Two Quotes for the Same Garden Differ by ₹80,000

Hardscape ambition. Covered above, and it dominates everything else.

Material grade. Natural stone against concrete pavers. Semi-mature trees against saplings. Solid timber decking against WPC. These are legitimate choices, not a cheaper company being clever, and a good quote makes the grade explicit so you can compare like with like.

Plant maturity. Instant effect is genuinely purchasable. A garden planted with semi-mature specimens looks finished on handover day and costs several times one planted with saplings that get there in three years.

Site condition. A flat, clear plot is straightforward. A sloped site needing retaining walls, or a neglected garden needing clearance before anything starts, carries civil work before the landscaping begins. If yours is the second kind, a one-time garden cleaning first will give you and the landscaper an honest view of what is actually there.

Design fees. Some quotes include design, some bill it separately at ₹15,000 to ₹1,00,000. Ask which, and ask whether the drawings are yours to take elsewhere. Our landscape design service covers what a proper design package includes.

Timing Changes the Price and the Result

October to February is the right window in Pune. Soil is workable, hardscaping cures properly, and new planting gets mild weather to establish roots before the April heat arrives. Grass laid in October is settled by January.

July and August are the worst. Mortar and waterproofing do not cure in constant damp, excavation turns to mud, and freshly laid lawn waterlogs. Projects that must run through monsoon get sequenced differently: covered hardscaping first, planting held back to September and October.

February and March are the last usable window before summer. Workable, but new planting needs drip irrigation from day one to survive April and May.

Renovation Costs More Than You Expect

Rebuilding an existing garden is not the same job as landscaping a blank plot, and it is usually the more expensive of the two per square foot.

The difference is everything that has to come out first. Dead plants, cracked paving, failed waterproofing, and whatever drainage mistakes the last person left behind. Clearing and disposal can be 20% to 30% of a renovation budget before any new work begins.

Our landscaping and garden renovation page has the renovation-specific bands, which run from around ₹15,000 for a lawn and bed refresh to ₹2,00,000 and above for a full rebuild with drainage correction.

Budget for the Year After

A finished landscape is not a finished expense. The first twelve months decide whether the investment holds.

New trees need deep watering twice weekly until roots establish. Fresh lawn needs daily watering for the first month. Hedges need their first shaping cut at six to eight weeks. Stone paths need re-grouting after the first monsoon.

Monthly garden maintenance for a landscaped garden runs ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 for a typical independent house, and more for bungalows. Against a ₹1,50,000 project, a year of proper care is a small fraction of the build cost and the difference between the garden looking like the handover photos in year three or not. Our guide to garden maintenance cost in Pune breaks the rates down by property type.

How to Read a Landscaping Quote

Five questions that separate a real quote from a number on a page:

  1. Is hardscape itemised separately from planting? If not, you cannot tell what is driving the price or where to cut.
  2. What grade of material, specifically? “Natural stone” covers a wide range of prices and lifespans.
  3. Is drainage a line item? If it is missing, it has probably not been designed.
  4. Who handles tree permissions and debris disposal? Both should be named, with responsibility assigned.
  5. What happens in the first six months? Ask what is covered if plants fail, and get it in writing.

A quote that answers all five may look higher than one that does not. It is usually the cheaper of the two by the end.

Getting a Real Number

Square foot ranges get you to a budget conversation, not a quote. What decides your actual number is site condition, how much of the design is built rather than planted, and how materials reach the garden.

We do a free site visit anywhere in Pune and PCMC, and quote with hardscape, softscape and civil work separated so you can see exactly what you are paying for and adjust the parts you want to. If your garden needs less than you were expecting, we will say so.

Access is the one variable people underestimate, and it is geographic. Bungalow plots in Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar usually take a tempo to the gate, so material handling stays cheap. Township and society projects in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hadapsar and along NIBM Road often mean lift access, restricted work hours and manual carry, which can add 10 to 15% to the same design.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does landscaping cost in Pune?
Landscaping in Pune starts at ₹15,000 for a small garden makeover under 500 sq ft. A medium residential project of 500 to 1,500 sq ft runs ₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000. A large bungalow garden of 1,500 to 5,000 sq ft runs ₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000. Farmhouse projects start around ₹3,00,000. The single biggest variable is how much hardscaping is involved, since paving, walls and water features cost several times what planting does.
What is the difference between hardscape and softscape cost?
Softscape means the living parts: lawn, plants, trees and soil. Hardscape means the built parts: paving, pathways, retaining walls, seating, lighting and water features. Hardscape typically takes 55% to 70% of a landscaping budget even though it occupies less of the garden. If a quote looks high, hardscape is almost always the reason.
Do I need permission to remove a tree during landscaping in Pune?
Yes. Under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, cutting or removing a tree requires permission from the Tree Authority through the Pune Municipal Corporation. Doing it without permission is an offence carrying a fine and possible imprisonment. Factor the application time into your project schedule, not just the cost.
Is rainwater harvesting compulsory for my landscaping project?
It depends on your plot. In Maharashtra, new buildings on plots of 300 square metres and above have required rainwater harvesting since 2007, and plots above 1,000 square metres since 2002, as a condition of the occupancy certificate. If you are landscaping an existing property this is not triggered automatically, but installing it anyway makes you eligible for a PMC property tax rebate.
How long does a landscaping project take in Pune?
A small garden makeover takes one to two weeks. A medium residential project takes two to four weeks. A large bungalow garden takes four to eight weeks. Add time if trees need Tree Authority permission, or if the work falls in monsoon, when hardscaping stalls because mortar and waterproofing will not cure in constant damp.
When is the best time to start landscaping in Pune?
October to February. The soil is workable, new planting gets mild weather to establish roots before the April heat, and hardscaping can cure properly. July and August are the worst months to start. If your timeline lands in monsoon, sequence covered hardscaping first and save planting for September and October.
How much does a landscape design cost separately?
A standalone landscape design in Pune runs ₹15,000 to ₹1,00,000 depending on the size of the site and the level of detail. Many firms, including us, adjust the design fee against the execution cost if you go ahead with the same team. Ask whether the design is yours to take elsewhere if you do not.
